The Global Mobility Index: These Are the World’s Most Powerful Passports in 2024

Six countries (France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore, and Spain) now share the top spot for the most powerful passport in the world. All of these countries allow visa-free travel to 194 out of 227 destinations. The ranking of passports is based on the number of destinations that can be accessed without a visa or e-visa, using data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA). The United States is tied with Canada and Hungary for the seventh most powerful passport, with visa-free entry to 188 destinations.
South Korea, Finland, and Sweden are tied for second place with visa-free access to 193 destinations. In third place are Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Austria. The global mobility gap between those at the top and bottom of the index has become wider than ever before. The passports that are ranked highest allow travel to 166 more destinations without a visa compared to Afghanistan, which is ranked last and has access to only 28 countries.
Twenty-five countries ranked higher than the US on the index. Afghanistan took last place on the index, with visa-free entry to 28 countries. Syria, Iraq, Pakistan, and Yemen are the bottom five countries, with 29, 31, 34, and 35 visa-free destinations, respectively.
